Second gold to Russia’s Alexander Guerunov in karate

Russia’s Alexander Guerunov gained his second 2005 World Games gold medal in karate in the open category after his win in the +80kg category on the previous day.

The 25-year-old World champion defeated Japan’s Shinji Nagaki in the final.
Yildiz Aras, of Turkey, gained the tile in the women’s open category only after extra time and a judges’ decision over Australian Natasha Hardy. Italian Michele Giuliani (I-60kg) beat Russian World silver medallist Yury Kalashnikov; and in the women’s -60kg category Serbia & Montenegro’s Snezana Peric defeated German Maria Musall 3-1.
In the kata discipline the judges took very close 3-2 decisions in the men’s and women’s competitions. 33-year-old Japanese Atsuko Wakai impressed with a fantastic performance against Frances Myriam Szkudlarek, six years her junior. Antonio Diaz of Venezuela achieved the men’s gold medal over Italian Luca Valdesi.
