“Handiwork” – The 26 chiropractors at the 2005 World Games

At the 2005 World Games in Duisburg altogether 26 chiropractors are skilfully removing painful disorders of the musculoskeletal system of their patients.

Every day, an average of 130 athletes are treated at their “clinic” at MSV Arena, at Marientor Theatre, at Koenig-Pilsener Halle Oberhausen, Landschaftspark Nord and Rhein-Ruhr-Hall.
They come from eight different countries but they all have one thing in common – all 26 are trained chiropractors with a university level education followed by a residence period and a postgraduate sports chiropractic program. This is a job description that does not yet exist in Germany – chiropractic is solely offered by physicians (chiro-therapists) or traditional healers with postgraduate qualifications. The situation in Switzerland, Great Britain or the United States, however, is quite different. This is where Alexander Steinbrenner, Doctor of Chiropractic, has completed his studies. He is one of only 60 chiropractors in Germany and President of the German Federation of Sports Chiropractic.
At the 2005 World Games in Duisburg he is one of those 26 chiropractors who are trying to help the participating athletes by their gentle, manual adjustment. The definition of chiropractic derives from Greek, with “chiro” (cheiros) meaning treatment by hand and “practice” (praktos) having done. But the results are not always achieved in the twinkling of an eye. Apart from a detailed case history, chiropractors are testing for the exact cause of the respective disorder. At the 2005 World Games these are most often caused by the shoulders or the rib cage, ankle joints or by bruises and pulled muscles. “With the help of manual procedures we adjust joints and are thus able to resolve restrictions in the neck or back without having to pull or jerk”, explains Alexander Steinbrenner. Chiropractors neither administer medication nor do they do surgery – in case of need they refer the patients to the respective specialists.
The FICS team (Fédération Internationale de Chiropratique du Sport) have treated up to a maximum of 186 athletes from 24 sports and 35 nations on a single day. “Many of them came to see us afterwards showing us their medals and thanked us. This is a great way to appreciate our efforts”, says Alexander Steinbrenner. At the 2005 World Games he is not only working hand in hand with the two “Chefs de Mission”, Dr. Timothy W. Ray (USA) and Dr. Brian C. Nook (Australia), and the 23 colleagues from FICS but as a volunteer, too.
