Location

Duisburg is situated on the confluence of the Ruhr and Rhine. The city extends across both banks of the two rivers.

The city is divided into 7 districts, sub-divided into 46 suburbs as follows:

Walsum: Vierlinden, Overbruch, Alt-Walsum, Aldenrade, Wehofen, Fahrn

Hamborn: Röttgersbach, Marxloh, Obermarxloh, Neumühl, Alt-Hamborn

Homberg-Ruhrort-Baerl: Ruhrort, Alt-Homberg, Hochheide, Baerl
Meiderich-Beeck: Bruckhausen, Beeck, Beeckerwerth, Laar, Untermeiderich, Mittelmeiderich, Obermeiderich

Rheinhausen: Rheinhausen-Mitte, Hochemmerich, Bergheim, Friemersheim, Rumeln-Kaldenhausen

Mitte: Altstadt, Neuenkamp, Kaßlerfeld, Duissern, Neudorf-Nord, Neudorf-Süd, Dellviertel, Hochfeld, Wanheimerort

Population

Shortly before neighbouring towns were first incorporated in 1905, the city's population was already over 100,000. After a series of further incorporations, the city now has some 498,000 inhabitants, and ranks 15th among Germany's major cities.
