Festivals
Duisburg has positioned itself amongst the "cult-name" festivals. The "Duisburger Akzente" (Duisburg Accents), the "KinderKulturFestival" (Children's Cultural Days), the "Traumzeit-Festival" (Dreamtime Festival) and the "Duisburger Tanztage" (Duisburg Days of Dancing) have become integral components of the city's cultural life. They orientate themselves clearly along the adventure and organisational expectations of their visitors far beyond the city and state borders.
Alongside these top-class festivals are also a manifold of fests, also organised by the Duisburg Marketing Corporation: the "Matjesfest" (Herring Fest) and the "Stadtfest" (City Festival), the "Weinfest" (Wine Fest) and the "Weihnachtsmarkt" (Christmas Market). Such events orient themselves around various cultural atmospheres with varying cultural customs. The cultural and city fests are, in a sense, local promotion. The "city of cultural sensation" bubble with variety and flair.

Duisburg Accents (Duisburger Akzente)
The "Duisburger Akzente" state cultural festival was established in 1976. Right from the beginning it was conceptualised as a festival that crossed borders. Its conception was based on an extended cultural idea that embraced social political development, life forms and value systems. Instead of building its profile based on the concentration on the fine arts, the "Duisburger Akzente" formed its image by concentrating on socially and culturally explosive topics.
Traumzeit-Festival
Setting the "Traumzeit-Festival" (Dreamtime Festival) apart is the convergence of musical highlights at one of the venues that lends Duisburg its identity- at the "Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord" (Duisburg-Nord Country Park). The grounds of iron and steel works is regarded today as the symbol of a region that is still shaped today by the coal and steel industry and, as such, stands for cultural and ethnic diversity. The "Traumzeit-Festival" bears to mind this diversity and, over the three-day period, the musical forms that have been moulded by acculturation.
The spectrum ranges from jazz to ethnic music and to classic and pop. Established stars like Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea or Paco de Lucia find the ideal space for their performances as well as artists such as Kari Bremnes or Didier Squiban.

Children's Cultural Festival (KinderKulturFestival)
Originally called "Accents for the Little Ones", the Children's Cultural Festival was established in a cooperative project between all Duisburg cultural institutions in 1998. The cultural event, produced by the city, is bundled into an annual highlight, whose theme orients around each of the "Accents" theme. The extensive cultural programme pushes into the foreground the playing skills of the children themselves. Kindergartens and schools are amongst the most important cooperative partners of the Children's Cultural Festival.
Duisburger Tanztage

Since 1988 the Duisburger Tanztage (Duisburg Days of Dance) event has established itself as forum for dancers across the country. From hip-hop and break dance, from oriental through to show and modern dances - an enormous spectrum of dance forms can be seen here. There aren't any age limits nor any other restrictions at the Tanztage. Beginners take some of their first steps on stage here but you can also see brilliant seemingly professional performances.
With an average of 3,500 participants and about 8,000 spectators, the Duisburger Tanztage has become the biggest amateur dance festival in Germany. It's not about competition but, instead, aims mainly to awaken the joy of different dance forms and provide the perfect platform for the participants. At the same time the Tanztage is making a contribution to the personal development of children and youth.
