Aims and tasks

The task of EG DU is to play a part in the improvement of the economic, social and housing structures in the Duisburg neighbourhoods particularly affected by problematic situations involving urban planning, social policy or intercultural affairs.

The tasks specific to each neighbourhood dependent upon the given problem situations is derived from the individual action programmes, with the implementation and further development of which EG DU has in each case been entrusted by the City Council.

Fields of activity of EG DU

Overlapping features here are:

The holistic approach to the solution of the local problems instead of isolated and specialised consideration of problems.

Based on the living conditions of the inhabitants a development concept for the neighbourhood is worked out which at the same time contributes to the improvement of the social structure, cultural and intercultural relations, the economic structure, housing construction and urban planning renewal.

The conceptual and measure-related interlinking of the various political fields and levels of action.

For example, by the interlinking of the investment measures for urban renewal with employment and qualification measures, long-term unemployed persons or recipients of social assistance are provided with temporary employment, combined with basic and further qualifications. The interlinking of the political levels of action is intended to render problems, approaches to solutions and planning between the neighbourhood, district, the City Council and the administration understandable and acceptable within an organised dialogue.

Beyond that, the agency's central terms of reference consist in the intensive participation of the people living in the neighbourhoods affected and of the existing initiatives, associations and such like, since sustainable and thus successful neighbourhood renewal is only possible with the involvement and acceptance of those concerned. Special importance is attached to the stimulation and promoting of the local people's own initiative and activities as 'help for self-help'.
