Goals

Façade design in Duisburg-Hochfeld

The neighbourhoods of Marxloh, Bruckhausen, Hochfeld and Beeck included in the 'Socially Integrative City - NRW' programme are, as a rule, characterised by extremely dense old-industry building development with a partly considerable need for modernisation and, a low percentage of open areas and green spaces.

The quarters supported within the scope of the 'Urban Conversion - West' programme, such as the Duisburg Poets' Quarter in Obermarxloh, are affected by demographically induced structural problems endangering the stability of these residential quarters.

Consequently, it is from these deficits that the renewal strategies start:

Public squares, open areas and green spaces are being correspondingly redesigned, the aim being to increase the residential value ecologically and in accordance with present-day needs and requirements.

The existing residential buildings which are often architecturally valuable but frequently neglected are being visually enhanced and upgraded energy-wise in such a way that the attractiveness of the neighbourhood is being improved.

Apart from the preservation and improvement of the existing housing, the closing of building gaps and, if necessary, further projects for the construction of new buildings which are partly target group-orientated are supported within the scope of neighbourhood-specific housing construction concepts.

As a decisive motive for moving out of the area, in particular in the case of the population groups with higher incomes, is the situation of the housing environment, housing environment improvement measures (façade/inner courtyard design, projects such as, for example 'Colourful neighbourhood') are being handled. For this purpose, the architects of EG DU are available with advice and support for those interested.

The infrastructure of the neighbourhoods is being improved and at the same time identification points for the residents are being created with the help of neighbourhood-orientated changes in the use of buildings characterising the face of the city and/or worthy of preservation as historical monuments to form social/cultural meeting points or public-private cooperation projects in the industrial field.

Information on individual projects can be found under 'Projects' and under the respective neighbourhoods.
