The Museum der Deutschen Binnenschifffahrt in Duisburg-Ruhrort exists since 1979. The "Gesellschaft zur Förderung des Museums der Deutschen Binnenschifffahrt Duisburg-Ruhrort e.V." is two years older. In September of 1977, 41 persons met with the goal of accomplishing something that had been the dream of many citizens of Duisburg for more than 50 years: founding an important shipping museum.
The articles of association formulate the goal of the sponsorship association as follows: "The organizations exclusively and immediately pursues charitable purposes (...), namely the expansion of the Museum der Deutschen Binnenschifffahrt to a collection of models of all objects and accessories related to shipping and ships as well as sponsoring scientific research in regard to the collections and the information of interested citizens." A large portion of the exhibits and storeroom stock belongs to the sponsorship organization.
Many measures implemented by the museum are only possible at all with the financial and non-material support of the association. In addition, the board and members constantly have an influence and contribute toward making the facility even more well-known.
